Threats / Problems / Issues

Alderney’s seabird population has been negatively affected by events in recent years. In 2013, two major pollution incidents involving polyisobutylene (PIB) resulted in over 4,000 seabird deaths in the English Channel, including around Alderney. Extreme winter weather in 2013/2014 resulted in a ‘seabird wreck’ in the Channel Islands and along the Normand-Breton coast, affecting 50,000 birds, including 30,000 puffins, and making it one of the worst ever incidents. With extreme weather events predicted to become more frequent with climate change, Alderney Wildlife Trust is championing a pan-island effort to assess the region’s seabirds. It is hoped that this will increase understanding and ultimately protection of seabird species in the future.
